DIY Lampshade Makeover

DIY Lampshade Makeover

Design by Eva Penchi

What you will need:

  • Approximately 1 1/2 yard of fabric. This will depend on the size of your lamp shade. *
  • Scissors
  • Needle + thread
  • Hot glue gun + at least 6 hot glue sticks
  • Pins or sewing clips
  • Fabric pen

Step by step guide:

  1. The first thing is to measure the height of your lampshade. You will add 1 extra inch to your measurement. Mark and cut straight.
  2. Mark a line 1/2 inch from the top and bottom edge with your fabric pen.
  3. Prepare your needle and make sure to tie a knot at the end (this is so that when you gather you don’t pull the thread out of the fabric).
  4. Sew along the marked line and then sew another line 1/2 inch below that.
  5. Begin to gather the lampshade to fit it to size. Then you glue the top and bottom with hot glue and you can cut the 1/2 inch protruding from both ends (top and bottom).
  6. Measure the top and bottom of your lampshade to make the biases. Fold the fabric on the bias and mark 1 inch (which will be a 2 inch bias when you open the fabric).
  7. Cut and iron 1/2 inch on each side inward. It’s easier with a bias maker :)
  8. Fold in half and glue in the center with hot glue.
  9. Glue up and down the lampshade making a small fold at the end of the bias for a better finish.
  10. Now turn on your lamp and enjoy!
